My irrational fears have been realised with the recent shark attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh. No longer am I being ridiculous when I rave about seeing shapes swimming below me – I bet that was the last thing that poor German
women saw.
This is very bad news for their tourism industry with this beautiful resort facing the exhausting task of shaking off fearful association. With official figures showling that for the financial year 2009-10 the tourism industry generated £7.3bn and is essential to the economy. This is undoubtedly a PR nightmare, how do you come back from such disaster? The tourism minister, Zuhair Gurana is being reactive to the press and playing up the solution angle. He is on a mission to determine why the animals behaved in such an unusual manner; after all if there is a reason there can be prevention.
I hope that Sharm el-Sheikh tourism industry recovers and the year round sunshine and sparkling blue waters attract more than hungry sharks.
